What was it that made him so special?
A middle aged man going
through some Kata, he wasn’t that fast, he wasn’t that sharp, nothing
like you would see in the Martial Art movies, absolutely nothing like
you would see Kata performed at competitions...... and yet his was so
much more........ Whenever I watched Sensei practising I knew that I
was witnessing something very special, something far deeper than just
Karate....... It was almost as if the perfect Kata was doing him......
It always struck me as “other worldly”...............

“Tonight is kata…” We had warmed up performing standing basics,
followed by moving basic technique up and down the dojo focusing on
individual skills and mindset - and from that work, most of has deduced
what the rest of the content of the class would be. Sensei gazed around
at the brown and black belt class… “Last week we worked on ‘kushanku’ –
a system kata in our style and this week we will work on the other
major ‘system’ kata… can anyone tell me what it is?”
The hands
shot up. Sensei had always taken the time to explain why we practised
the way that we do and how the structure of our kata was so important
and the skills that we need to focus on at each individual grade in
each kata.

"Look up and forward Joe..."
It must have been the twentieth time that Sensei had said it during this class.
"Don’t
look down… There's no money on the floor... (laughter) You have to
direct your attention towards your opponent and use the “thrust” from
your eyes to influence both him and yourself.
"So how are we supposed to do that then Sensei? This isn't some of that mystical "chi" stuff is it?”

“He’s too big Sensei. Every time we collide I get knocked back.”
“Then don’t collide.”
“How else can you fight, there’s got to be an interaction of force and there’s no doubt that his is bigger!”
“Then don’t fight.”
“How else am I supposed to learn Karate.......”

“You didn’t turn up for class last night?”
“Sorry Sensei… had a family commitment..”
“Right….. and……”
“Well, family comes first doesn’t it?”
“You couldn’t phone?”
“Oh yeah… sorry I didn’t think…”

“Yamee!” Sensei leaped in between the protagonists.
The two
young fit guys had been hammering seven buckets out of each other - it
started as normal “Dojo sparring” and gradually got heavier. One caught
the other a bit hard in the ribs and then they both seemed to get
progressively more excited as the fight went on. Sensei seemed to find
it quite amusing….
“You remind me of two Stags butting horns” he chuckled. The two guys were taking some time to calm down.
“I think it’s important to make it realistic” one of them said.
Sensei’s
mouth had stopped laughing but his eyes hadn’t. “This sort of sparring
bears no relation to real fighting - and owes more to sport and modern
Japanese University life” he said.

“Sit down.”
We all sat down against the wall and looked expectantly at Sensei.
‘Ummmmm….. Frank…” Frank leapt to his feet and stood in the centre of the hall facing the students in a ready stance.
“Kushanku.”
Frank
moved to attention stance, bowed to a 45 degree angle moved his feet
apart and placed his left hand over his right, ring finger to ring
finger before making a circle with his arms in front of him. He then
proceeded to move through the Kata making each movement as powerful as
possible breathing out heavily with the application of each move and
making his kiai so loud it was deafening! At certain points he was
trying so hard he stumbled, falling over his own feet. At the end he
was soaked in sweat and breathing really heavily.

Oh no! Sensei was singing…..
He’s good at Martial Arts, but
singing…. Forget it! Why do people always want to do what they’re no
good at? The students were wincing as he sang outrageously out of tune…
“It’s
not what you do it’s the way that you do it, it’s not what you do it’s
the way that you do it…. It’s not what you do it’s the way that you do
it…. And that’s how you get things done…..
You can try hard… don’t mean a thing…. Take it easy… then your chimes will ring!”
Thank God he stopped. He looked piercingly at us.
